• Events like workshops and conferences held either in the Stuttgart region or in Brussels enable cooperation, know-how-exchange, marketing and influence on political decisions and allow the Stuttgart region to both market itself as a business location and to initiate concrete projects.

OPEN DAYS 2005

The OPEN DAYS 2005 ("European Week of Regions and Cities") event series, launched by the European Commission's DG for Regional Policy and the Committee of the Regions, took place from 10th till 13th October in Brussels. One of the selected official partner consortia is "METREX and the Lisbon Regions", an alliance of six representations of European Metropolitan Regions, led by the Stuttgart Region European Office. The consortium consists of members of the METREX Network of European Metropolitan Regions and Areas and of the informal Brussels-based network of the "Lisbon Regions". These are the Bratislava Region (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), Regio Randstad (The Netherlands), Regione Emilia Romagna (Italy), Stuttgart Region (Germany) and West Midlands (United Kingdom). METREX and the Lisbon Regions contributed to the OPEN DAYS with two workshops within these the role of Metropolitan Regions in achieving the Lisbon objectives was discussed. Representatives from all over Europe such as politicians, practitioners, journalists and academics attended the events. The workshops focused on opportunities and approaches at the regional level to achieve more competitiveness, ways of monitoring the Regional Development and the role of governance structures to enhance competence, capability and metropolitan development activities. Furthermore an exhibition illustrated best practices for the delivery of the Lisbon strategy in Metropolitan Regions.
